How Can You Tell if the Screen Is Broken?
A damaged screen doesn’t always look the same. Common symptoms include:

- Black “ink” patches spreading across the display.
- Vertical or horizontal coloured lines.
- Flickering.
- Only part of the screen working.
- A completely black display even though the laptop powers on.
Sometimes the outer surface looks almost perfect while the LCD panel underneath has been damaged. If the picture changes when you gently move the lid, the screen is often the culprit.
Will I Lose My Files?
This is usually the first question people ask.
The good news is that a broken screen does not normally damage your documents, photographs or emails. Your files are stored on the laptop’s SSD or hard drive, not inside the screen itself.
In many cases we can even connect the laptop to an external monitor to confirm everything is still there before replacing the screen.
Can It Be Repaired?
Usually, yes.
Most laptops simply need a replacement LCD panel. Some premium or touchscreen models require the complete display assembly to be replaced, while others may also need new hinges or a new lid if the impact has caused additional damage.

Is It Worth Repairing?
Often it is.
A screen replacement is normally worthwhile if your laptop:
- Is only a few years old.
- Runs Windows 11 comfortably.
- Has an SSD.

However, if the laptop is already very slow, has several faults, or cannot realistically be upgraded to meet your needs, replacing the whole machine may represent better value.

How Much Does a Screen Repair Cost?
There isn’t a single price because screens vary enormously.

Business laptops are often surprisingly economical to repair, while ultra-thin premium laptops can sometimes be more expensive because the screen is bonded into the lid.

Sometimes.
If the rest of the laptop is working, you may be able to connect it to an external monitor or television using HDMI or USB-C.
However, if the hinges are damaged, the lid is twisted or pieces of glass are lifting away from the display, it’s best to stop using it until it has been checked.
Should I Replace the Screen Myself?
Replacement screens are available online, but modern laptops are much more delicate than many people expect. Tiny ribbon cables, hidden clips, adhesive strips and internal batteries all make the job more difficult than it first appears.
Installing the wrong panel or accidentally damaging another component can quickly turn a straightforward repair into a much more expensive one.

Yes.
Pressure on the lid can cause cracks to spread and black patches to grow larger. Continuing to use a damaged laptop may also place extra strain on the hinges or display cables.
If the damage has only just happened, it’s usually worth arranging an inspection sooner rather than later.

- Always close the lid carefully.
- Don’t leave pens, headphones or chargers on the keyboard before closing it.
- Carry the laptop in a padded case.
- Avoid lifting it by one corner of the screen.
